Laparoscopic cartridges

Open surgery cartridges (linear and linear cutter)

Linear cutter staplers These are used in abdominal, chest, gynecological and pediatric surgery. The main purpose of this device is to cut and remove organs or tissues. Depending on the effective length of the anastomosis and cut, linear cutter staples are made in sizes from 55 mm to 100 mm.

Two double rows of titanium staples are loaded into the linear cutter cartridge, which simultaneously cuts and divides the tissue between the two double rows. For each stapler size, there are staples with two different heights, allowing anastomosis of both thick and thin tissues.

Laparoscopic cartridges

Staples loaded into laparoscopic cartridges are used to remove or close tissues inside the body. Surgeries in which laparoscopic staplers are used include bariatric surgery, where titanium staples greatly help close stomach tissue quickly and reliably.

These cartridges are made in different colors based on staple size and height, as shown in the table below.

Color Open Staple Height (mm) Closed Staple Height (mm)
White 2.5 1
Blue 3.5 1.5
Gold 3.5 1.8
Green 4.8 2.15

In a newer technology called TRI, staples of different heights are made and arranged so they can staple tissue in a graduated way for the best result and seal the junction of the two tissues. The table below shows the colors and heights of these cartridges.

Color Open Staple Height (mm)
Violet 4.0/3.5/3.5
Black 4.8/4.5/4.5

Circular stapler cartridges

These staplers are used in bowel and hemorrhoid surgery; one of the most widely used is the hemorrhoid stapler. Two or three circular, staggered rows of staples sit inside the cartridge, and by driving them into the tissue, two layers of a cavity can be sutured together. To complete the anastomosis, a circular blade inside the stapler cuts away the excess tissue.

The Laparoscopic Cartridge: A Device for Suturing

In another article in our news magazine, we covered the laparoscopic cartridge and its other models. As we mentioned, the cartridge holds the stapler needles used to cut, remove or suture tissues. We also discussed that cartridges can come in different models depending on the type of tissue and the type of surgery.

In staplers with a cutting function, a blade positioned between the rows of staples allows the tissue to be cut and stapled in a single step. How does this work? First, the tissue is placed in the stapler’s jaws. Then the staples are fired and the tissue is closed. As it closes, the blade divides the tissue and the staples penetrate the tissue on both sides of the cut line. The wound edges are thus compressed and stapled (sutured).

Depending on the type of tissue, cartridges are made in various types and colors.

Types of Surgical Cartridges
Color Texture Open Staple Height (mm) Closed Staple Height (mm)
Gray Mesentery 2 0/75
White Vascular 2/5 1
Blue Standard 3/5 1/5
Gold Standard/thick 3/8 1/8
Green Thick 4/1 2

Besides the type of tissue, the type of surgery also affects the choice of cartridge; the most important are explained below.

Closing or joining tissues is one of the important processes in surgery. Various methods are used, such as suturing and adhesives, and each has limitations. Among them, surgical staplers, as devices that join two tissues, have attracted a lot of attention.

These devices are made up of several parts, one of the most important being the cartridge. In this article, we look at this key component of surgical staplers. If you stay with us to the end, you will have complete information about it.

What Is a Laparoscopic Cartridge?

Most of you have probably used a stapler to fasten a few sheets of paper. Surgical staplers work much like ordinary staplers, except that they are used to close wounds or body tissues.

These devices have a handle that comes in various shapes and sizes. One of the most important components of staplers is the cartridge. The cartridge is a chamber that holds the needles, or surgical staples. Two or more rows of staples are loaded into it.

In staplers with a cutting function, a blade positioned between the rows of staples allows the tissue to be cut and stapled in a single step. How does this work? First, the tissue is placed in the stapler’s jaws. Then the staples are fired and the tissue is closed.
